If you sell products to your customers, many of the items probably already have UPC barcodes you scan when ringing up sales. However, you can use barcodes on products or items for other purposes as well. For instance, using relatively inexpensive labels from Avery and a free app on the company’s website, you can create QR, or Quick Response, codes customers can scan with a number of free apps available for smartphones, to view other pertinent item information such as support information, promotional coupons or even training and instructional videos.

1.

Select and purchase Avery labels appropriate for the packaging on which you want to use them. Select labels that allow you to print the barcodes large enough to be easily viewable but small enough that they don’t take up too much surface area on the item or product package. For instance, if you want to create barcodes for inventory SKUs or similar uses, you might opt to use standard Avery address labels that are 1-inch by 2 and 5/8 inches. For QR codes or barcodes that customers will scan themselves to access online support, coupons or other information about products, Avery 1 and ½-inch labels may be more appropriate.

2.

Note the Avery product number for the label on the outside of the box.

3.

Navigate to the Avery Design and Print Online website (link in Resources).

4.

Enter the Avery label product number in the search box, and then click “Go.” Click the “Select and Continue” link under the blank version of the label displayed for the product number you entered. Wait a few moments for the website to load the label template into your Web browser.

5.

Click the “Add Text Box” button in the Text pane of the design window. Replace the “TYPE YOUR TEXT” text with your own. Select a font and font size for the text with the buttons in the Text pane. Use your mouse to drag and position the text on the label surface as needed.

6.

Click the “Images” menu arrow under the Text pane. Click the “From Avery Gallery” button to select stock images from the Avery website and place them on the label. Alternatively, click “From My Computer” to upload your own images to place on the label. Position and resize the selected or uploaded image on the label with the left mouse button.

7.

Click the “Barcodes and QR Codes” menu arrow under the Images pane, and then click the “Add Barcode” button. The Barcode and QR Code Wizard window appears.

8.

Click the drop-down list with the “QRCode” label and select the type of barcode you want to create for the label. For instance, if you want to enter a numeric code for inventory or other internal purposes, select a standard barcode type such as “Code 128,” “Code 39,” “Code 39X” or “UPC-A.” If you want to code a website URL, email address, phone number or other type of contact information in the barcode, leave the “QRCode” value in the list intact, and select the appropriate code type in the sub-level drop-down list.

9.

Type the value for the barcode in the text field in the Barcode and QR Code Wizard window. Click the “Reload” button to display a preview of the new barcode or QR Code in the Sample View pane.

10.

Click the “Finish” button in the Barcode and QR Code Wizard window to place the new barcode on the label template screen. Resize and position the barcode or QR Code on the label with the left mouse button.

11.

Add other text or images to the labels as needed. Click the “Preview & Print” button at the top of the Design and Print Online webpage.

13.

After the Print Design pop-up window appears, click the “Open” button to open the label sheet in Adobe Acrobat or your default PDF view application. The Avery website loads the label sheet in your PDF application and launches the print dialogue box automatically.

14.

Click the “Print” button in the Adobe Acrobat Reader or other PDF application window. The printer prints the labels sheet as designed.

Tips

  • You can also add sequential numbers or merge data from a database for creating sheets of labels with varying information for the barcodes or text fields. To do this, click the “Sequential Numbers” or “Import Data (Mail Merge)” buttons in the Text pane area and follow the prompts to create individual codes or field entries for each label on a sheet.
  • After creating and printing QR Code labels from the Avery website, use a smartphone app to scan and test them for accuracy and readability. You can download and install apps for most major smartphone platforms that allow you to use the phone as a barcode or QR Code scanner (link in Resources).

Warning

  • If you use Mozilla Firefox and do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader or another PDF viewer installed, the label sheet will not print correctly using the PDF app native to Firefox. Before printing labels from the Avery website in Firefox, download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader or another external PDF plugin.
